Visiting Archeological site -Pottuvil area

Magul Maha ancient site is located in the sub thick forest of Lahugala village, about 20 km from Arugam Bay. It is believed that it was built by King Kavanthissa during 453 - 474 AD. Among items that have been uncovered are the only half moon stone in Sri Lanka that features men, a ’santhi‘ dagoba, rare in Sri Lanka but common to India, the wedding and worship halls that fade into the deep forest. The site was also known as the Ruhunu Maha Vihara in ancient times. Two inscriptions of queen Ruhunu can also be seen.

The second site we visit is Muhudua Maha. This is a very ancient archeological site surrounded by tamarind trees on the beach in Pottuvil Village. Although it is believed that other remains of ancient structures are still buried under a thick layer of sand, the pillared construction featuring four Buddha statues is worth visiting. The scenery is just stunning.
