Organic Agriculture Association Mailagastotum, Pottuvil

Organic Agriculture Association (OAA) is a registered farmers association based in Mailagastotum, Pottuvil.  OAA is composed of 50 members who cultivate vegetables and fruits applying organic agriculture techniques. The quality of the products is certified by the Agriculture Department of Pottuvil.


Organic Agriculture Association (OAA) which is a farmer organization consists of 50 members who engaged in organic farming with patronage of ICEI, Department of Agriculture & Gami Seva Sevana (IFOAM member from Sri Lanka). Mailagastottam is a resettlement village closed to Arugambay which consists of more than 50 farmers affected by the tsunami. People of this village were living without any means of livelihood. Each of them is having half an acre of land. Most of villagers in this village depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
After the tsunami the ICEI focuses on organic agriculture programmes in Mailagastottam which aim at high productivity while ensuring conservation and utilization of natural resources on a sustainable basis. Introduction of organic integrated agriculture with main emphasis on organic farming, recycling of organic waste, mulching, cover cropping, composting, soil and water conservation, making irrigation infrastructure, cashew plantation, agro forestry, mixed farming, crop diversity  and   animal husbandry  are some of the measures taken to support sustainable agriculture in Mailagastottam.


The OAA practices with their members the art of organic farming which is to make the best use of ecological principles and processes. Organic agriculture is an effective method that helps the poorest farmers to increase their food security. Organic farming does not require expensive and external inputs and contribute to the improvement of soil fertility. The organic agricultural products are safer for consumption and farmers are free from the hazards caused by the misuse of agro-chemicals.
Since Arugambay is closed to this village, it has good potential for agro tourism
as well. Here hospitality is offered on farms. Holiday makers can get opportunity to assist with farming task during the visit, access and enjoy the fruits of labour and way of the farmers of the land. The farmers would provide a home-stay opportunity and education. Their products should have good market from the surrounding hoteliers to treat tourist by providing organic foods.
