We take you to two traditional villages in a very eco-friendly way – with bikes! The first place to visit is Mailagustotum, a small farming and fishing village, about 2 km from Arugam Bay. The site is interesting because all farming is organic! Locals grow their own fruits and vegetables and produce their own organic fertilizers. Some of the community farms serve more than 100 families. You will witness and learn about different compost making techniques, worm fertilizers, mulching and other organic farming activities. We also learn about the different uses of herbs and plants, great for researchers as well as for tourists.
From there we make our way to Kudakali, less than 3 km away and home to two Women’s Rural Development Societies (WRDS). We visit homes that belong to these societies, where we’re shown different production techniques for local handicrafts. A complementary fruit juice or Tambili (King Coconut) gives this great experience a final touch! |
